CAUSE
This problem occurs because of a timing issue. This timing issue resolves
itself. SharePoint Portal Server SP2 includes a change that causes the
SharePoint Portal Server service (Msdmserv) to turn on directory browsing on
the portal folder as part of the workspace upgrade. This process occurs when
Msdmserv restarts for the first time after you upgrade to SharePoint Portal
Server SP2.
The workspace upgrade is a lengthy process, and it causes the World Wide Web
Publishing Service (W3SVC) to restart. On some computers, this process may take
10 to 15 minutes. After the upgrade is complete, the portal page shows the
existing content. If you access the portal before the upgrade is completed, the
content appears to be missing. The W3SVC service may not be in a controllable
state, and if so, Msdmserv cannot shut down and restart the W3SVC service. If
Msdmserv cannot shut down and restart the W3SVC service, the administrator must
stop the W3SVC service manually, and then restart all associated services.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, wait until the upgrade of the portal has completed.
After the upgrade is complete, the timing issue resolves itself. If the upgrade
is complete, and the existing content still appears to be missing, you may have
to resolve the problem manually. To do so, follow these steps.
Note Microsoft recommends that you permit the upgrade to complete these steps.
If you have several portals on this server or the performance of your server is
limited for some reason, it may take longer than 10 to 15 minutes for the
upgrade to complete.
1. Use the Internet Information Services Manager to select the
default Web site.
2. Locate your workspace under the default Web site, expand
the subfolders, and then under your workspace virtual folder, locate the Portal
subfolder.
For example, if your workspace is named MySales, expand the subfolders, and
then locate the subfolder named Portal under the MySales workspace.
3. Right-click the Portal subfolder and then click Properties.
4. Click the Directory tab, click to select the Directory
Browsing check box, and then click Apply.
Note Repeat this step for each workspace on the server.
5. Stop, and then restart, the W3SVC service.
6. Close all open instances of your Web browser.
7. Open a new instance of your Web browser, and then view the
portal.
